  HOUSING UPDATE: 12 JULY 2000
Asilomar has booked all overnight rooms that were set aside for our Symposium. The only possibility of obtaining an overnight room at Asilomar is if you are willing to stay in a 4-person room with 3 roommates that Asilomar staff will assign. (These roommates will all be attending the Symposium.) Please fax your Asilomar Housing Registration Form to Asilomar indicating this option immediately. If you would like to be put on a waitlist for single or double-occupancy rooms that may become available due to cancellations, you may do this, but there are no guarantees. Please fax your form to Asilomar immediately indicating this option.

Asilomar Conference Center

    Mailing and Overnight delivery address:
      800 Asilomar Blvd.
      Pacific Grove, CA 93950
      (831) 372-8016

Asilomar Conference Grounds (grounds map) are situated on the tip of the Monterey Peninsula overlooking the Pacific Ocean (local map). The grounds occupy 109 acres of secluded forest and dune landscape, and is minutes away from all the other attractions of the Monterey Peninsula, including world-famous golf courses, tennis, fishing, shopping in nearby Carmel, and the world-renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium. The Asilomar Conference Grounds are part of the California State Park system and are maintained in a rustic, yet comfortable manner. Asilomar is located in a splendid seaside grove scattered with small housing units, excellent indoor and outdoor dining facilities, and first-rate meeting rooms, where we will be having our daily sessions.

Staying at Asilomar will afford great convenience due to the centralization of all activities at Asilomar: meetings, meals, and overnight lodgings. Overnight rooms range from small, private, 2-person maximum quarters to larger, shared, 4-person maximum quarters. Each room has its own private bathroom. Rooms generally contain either one double bed, two double beds or four single beds. Some rooms have fireplaces and ocean views.

We have reserved overnight accommodations for conference participants on the grounds of Asilomar. Rooms at Asilomar are a very economical and convenient alternative to the surrounding hotels and motels. Staying at Asilomar saves the conference participant the trouble of parking, locating restaurants and paying for food separately, and transportation to and from the conference. Three meals/day + tax are included in the price of overnight accommodations at Asilomar. Meals are served on the grounds in a large pleasant dining hall.

Because housing is so tight at Asilomar, if you are not traveling with family or a friend, we strongly encourage you to share rooms with an acquaintance. Rooms at Asilomar are fairly well appointed for sharing. In order to facilitate room sharing at Asilomar, we have created a web bulletin board of people looking for roommates. Please check this site before you turn in your Asilomar Housing Registration Form to see if you can a roommate. Asilomar can also assign you a roommate if you choose that option on the form.

If you will be traveling with your family, please use the Asilomar Housing Registration Form and indicate the names and ages of your children on your form. Your spouse should fill out a separate form. List the children on only one form

You have two primary options for overnight lodgings while at the conference:

    1. Obtain accommodations at Asilomar.
    2. Book lodgings elsewhere at one of many area hotels.

This page provides you with more details about staying at Asilomar, including pictures of the grounds. If you do choose to stay at Asilomar please read this page carefully for important instructions.

Your early attention to this matter is advisable because Asilomar space might become limiting.

ALERT: Accommodations must be booked well in advance, whether staying at Asilomar or otherwise. Please do not delay making your reservations either at Asilomar or local hotels (if you choose to stay off Asilomar grounds) as the conference immediately follows a US holiday weekend (Labor Day) and the following weekend, September 9-10, there is a national car race in the Monterey area. Many hotels in the area are already sold out as of January 2000!

Asilomar's Cancellation Policy

All cancellations are subject to a US $25 per person processing fee. Cancellation after July 6, 2000 is subject to forfeiture of all fees if space is not resold. In the case of cancellation on the day of arrival or early departure, all fees are forfeited.

Staying in a local hotel or motel

If you desire more luxurious, private accommodations there are many excellent hotels in the immediate vicinity, many within walking distance to the conference grounds. This listing of hotels was compiled by Symposium staff in January 2000 and reflects availability and prices at that time.

Please do not delay making your reservations at these local hotels because the conference immediately follows a holiday weekend (Labor Day) and the following weekend, September 9-10, there is a heavily attended National Car race in Monterey.

If you do decide to stay off the Asilomar Grounds, and particulary if you are in accommodations that are not within walking distance to Asilomar, a rental car is highly recommended. You will need to drive to the Conference Grounds daily and drive to restaurants. There is parking available on Asilomar Grounds and in the surrounding areas.

Staying at Asilomar before and/or after the Symposium

By completing the Asilomar Housing Registration Form (& mailing it to Asilomar) you are reserving overnight accommodations at Asilomar only for the dates of the Symposium (Sept. 6-10). If you wish to arrive earlier than September 6 and/or stay beyond September 10, Asilomar may be able to accommodate you. Rooms beyond the dates of the conference are subject to availability and are assigned on a first-come first-served basis. Room reservations for dates outside the conference cannot be made until 90 days or less before the conference begins, or between June 6, 2000 and September 6, 2000. If you would like to stay at Asilomar for nights other than Sept. 6, 7, 8, & 9, please call +1 (831) 372-8016 and ask for the Leisure Guest Reservations Desk. You may inquire about the availability of rooms for any dates beyond the dates of the conference. Rooms may not be available at all depending on other ongoing conferences taking place at Asilomar. If you have already booked overnight lodgings through Asilomar for the conference dates and you know which area and room number you have been assigned, you may check on the availability of this specific room for other dates. If the room is available you will not have to change rooms before or after the conference. However, if the room is already booked for the dates you require, then you will have to switch rooms for your stay before and/or after the conference.

Rooms at Asilomar for dates other than Sept. 6-9 are considered non-conference dates and are priced higher. The fee for non-conference rooms is US $92 per room for two persons in one room. This price includes breakfast, but no other meal, and does not include tax. Non-conference rooms are booked exclusively over the phone, there will be no hard copy requests for these rooms accepted. Please call +1 (831) 372-8016 when you are ready to book extra-dates. Non-conference rooms are reserved with full payment at the time you call. Please have your credit card ready when you call. Keep in mind that you will need to call Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 am and 5 pm Pacific Standard Time. After booking (& paying) for a non-conference room, you will have 48 hours to cancel your reservation to receive a full refund. If you cancel your reservation after 48 hours after booking, you will receive no refund.

If Asilomar cannot accommodate you before and after the conference, you might check the availability of rooms at these nearby lodgings.

Monterey Weather

Monterey and surrounding regions have a year-round temperate climate. Daytime highs are usually in the low 70's (degrees F). Nighttime temperatures can be quite a bit cooler than midday temperatures so layered, casual clothing and comfortable walking shoes will be appropriate for the climate and the conference. Rain is unlikely, but fog is common.
